Team story
Origins
The BMW 269 was a Formula 2 car, not the first single-seater of a full Formula 1 programme. In 1969, the German manufacturer entered it at the Nürburgring, where the Grand Prix also admitted cars from the lower category. Gerhard Mitter, Hubert Hahne and Dieter Quester were the intended drivers for that weekend.
The Formula 1 journey
Mitter lost his life during practice. After the accident, BMW withdrew the other two cars: no 269 started the Grand Prix. Hahne and Quester therefore did not contest the race, while the constructor's participation remained confined to practice sessions, without placings or points.

A distinctive way of racing
The 269 formed part of BMW's work on single-seaters and Formula 2 four-cylinder engines. It was not the same as the early post-war BMW Specials built by independent preparers. The later BMW-engined Brabhams would also have a different chassis and different responsibility for its design.
What remains
Mitter's death brought that Nürburgring weekend to a halt. BMW's work in Formula 2 continued, while its engine-supply role with Brabham and Williams and subsequent ownership of Sauber opened other chapters. Their successes do not belong to the 269, which did not contest the 1969 World Championship race for which it had been entered.
