Team story
Origins
Marcel Balsa reached single-seater racing through the French post-war racing scene, after using a Bugatti Type 51. He then prepared a BMW-engined Special. The Balsa name in the archive identifies that personal project, not a BMW works programme or a team with a documented subsequent production run.
The Formula 1 journey
His encounter with the World Championship came at the Nürburgring in 1952, when European Grands Prix were run to Formula 2 regulations. Balsa managed to start but retired after a few laps. He therefore gained neither a placing nor points from that sole appearance.
Historical timeline
Three chapters in the story of Balsa
Three episodes to revisit the people, cars and races that shaped this journey.
First appearance · German Grand Prix
Marcel Balsa · German Grand Prix 1952. The recorded outcome is DNF. This is the first recorded race start, or the first entry if the team never started a race.
Sporting landmark · Balsa
No classified race result is documented for this part of Balsa’s record. The entries and cars listed elsewhere on the page provide the available reference points; they should not be read as completed races.
Latest recorded appearance · German Grand Prix
Marcel Balsa · German Grand Prix 1952. The recorded outcome is DNF. This is the last race start attributed to this constructor in the archive, not necessarily the end of the organisation behind it.
A distinctive way of racing
The Special's BMW straight-six belonged to the 328 engine family, also used by several German constructors. Accounts variously describe the car as a Balsa or BMW Special. Its connection with the driver who prepared it distinguishes this car from the other BMW conversions in the same race.
What remains
Balsa had also raced a Jicey-BMW, and his activity does not coincide entirely with the Nürburgring Special. Sources differ over the details of the German retirement; the certain fact is that the race was not completed. His constructor's World Championship career remains confined to 1952, without automatically extending it to the other cars he drove.
