Team story
Origins
The change of name in 2020 brought the AlphaTauri clothing brand onto the grid without moving the team away from Faenza. The organisation previously known as Toro Rosso remained under Franz Tost's leadership, with Pierre Gasly and Daniil Kvyat. The AT01 retained the Honda engine partnership established under the previous identity.
The Formula 1 journey
Gasly won at Monza in the first season under the new name, giving the team a success that should not be counted as a Toro Rosso victory. In 2021, he was third at Baku, while Yuki Tsunoda, who had replaced Kvyat, took fourth at Abu Dhabi. The AT02 helped secure sixth in the Constructors' Championship, while the next two seasons were less productive.
Historical timeline
Three chapters in the story of AlphaTauri
Three episodes to revisit the people, cars and races that shaped this journey.
First appearance · Austrian Grand Prix
Pierre Gasly · Austrian Grand Prix 2020. The recorded position is P7; this number alone does not show whether the driver completed the race distance. This is the first recorded race start, or the first entry if the team never started a race.
Sporting landmark · Italian Grand Prix
Pierre Gasly · Italian Grand Prix 2020. The recorded position is P1; this number alone does not show whether the driver completed the race distance. This marks the first win or podium where one exists, otherwise the highest recorded placing for this constructor.
Latest recorded appearance · Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
Daniel Ricciardo · Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2023. The recorded position is P11; this number alone does not show whether the driver completed the race distance. This is the last race start attributed to this constructor in the archive, not necessarily the end of the organisation behind it.
A distinctive way of racing
Honda describes the AT02 as a development of the AT01 that combined components from the Red Bull RB16 with aerodynamics developed by the team. The ownership relationship therefore provided access to shared technology while leaving Faenza with its own design work. Tsunoda came through Honda's driver development programme, also highlighting the team's role in nurturing drivers.
What remains
More changes than usual came in 2023: Nyck de Vries was replaced by Daniel Ricciardo, then Liam Lawson covered the injured Australian's absence. Tost's tenure also ended at the close of the year. From 2024, the name became RB: the four AlphaTauri seasons remain a clearly defined chapter, associated above all with Gasly's victory and podium.
