Gordon Coppuck combined the lessons of the M16 Indianapolis car with a compact Formula 1 monocoque. The result accepted years of aerodynamic, suspension and safety development without losing its balance, a rare quality in an era of rapid experimentation.

Emerson Fittipaldi won the 1974 title and James Hunt repeated the achievement in 1976. That longevity made the M23 more than a successful car: it became the foundation of McLaren's first sustained period at the front.
