The engine becomes part of the chassis
Colin Chapman and Maurice Philippe ended the monocoque behind the cockpit and bolted the Cosworth DFV directly to it as a stressed member. The rear suspension and gearbox hung from the engine, removing the need for a full rear frame. This made the car lighter and simpler while establishing a layout that became fundamental to modern Formula 1 design.
