Chapman treated every component as an opportunity to remove weight and frontal area. The engine was inclined inside a narrow spaceframe, producing a car whose delicacy anticipated the Lotus philosophy even before the team adopted rear-engine architecture.

The 16 was fragile and arrived just as rear-engined cars were changing Formula 1, yet it established the visual and technical daring that would soon make Lotus a reference point for the sport.
