Jerez opened in 1985 and hosted the Spanish Grand Prix from 1986 to 1990, later returning twice as the European Grand Prix. Chicanes and safety revisions changed the original fast layout, while the venue remained an important testing circuit.
Ayrton Senna beat Nigel Mansell by just 0.014 seconds in 1986. The 1997 title decider is even more famous: Michael Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve collided, Villeneuve continued to become champion and Schumacher was excluded from the standings.
