Villeneuve’s Ferrari was not the most agile car at Jarama, but he exploited its power and denied his pursuers an opening. His 1981 win came with a close group behind him. It was not an escape but sustained control of space, braking and acceleration: a defensive performance in which track position had to be protected corner by corner.
