Ferrari arrived in Brazil with doubts about its new semi-automatic transmission. Mansell won on his Scuderia debut, demonstrating a system that moved gear selection to paddles behind the steering wheel. Jacarepaguá became a technical milestone as well as a sporting success: the innovation still had problems, but it could already win a race.
