Developed under Patrick Head and Adrian Newey, the FW14B combined a reliable 3.5-litre Renault V10 with a semi-automatic transmission, traction control and an active suspension system that continuously managed ride height. The result was a stable aerodynamic platform that could preserve the car's intended attitude far more consistently than a conventional passive setup.
The season of Red Five
Nigel Mansell won nine Grands Prix and secured the Drivers' Championship in Hungary with five rounds remaining. Riccardo Patrese added victory in Japan, bringing the FW14B to ten wins from sixteen races. Williams also took the Constructors' title after starting from pole at fifteen of the sixteen events.
