Four wheels to solve one aerodynamic problem
Designer Derek Gardner replaced the conventional front pair with four 10-inch wheels. Their smaller frontal area could be hidden within the bodywork, reducing lift and drag, while the second axle recovered contact patch and braking capacity. Transparent cockpit panels let the drivers monitor tyres they could no longer see directly.
The only six-wheeled Grand Prix winner
The P34 reached the podium in Monaco almost immediately. At Anderstorp, Jody Scheckter started from pole and led Patrick Depailler to a Tyrrell one-two in the 1976 Swedish Grand Prix. Development stalled when the bespoke small tyres fell behind conventional rubber, but its single victory remains unique.
