Technical identity
The MP4/4's remarkably low bodywork placed Senna and Prost in a deeply reclined position. Its light carbon-composite chassis, efficient aerodynamics, pull-rod suspension and compact Honda RA168E V6 turbo formed an exceptionally complete package under the 150-litre fuel limit and 2.8-bar boost cap imposed for 1988.
One race short of perfection
Ayrton Senna won eight races and the Drivers' Championship; Alain Prost won seven. Together they delivered fifteen victories and fifteen pole positions from sixteen events, while McLaren scored 199 Constructors' Championship points. Only the Italian Grand Prix escaped the MP4/4.
