Built around turbo violence
Gérard Ducarouge and Martin Ogilvie paired a carbon-fibre and Kevlar monocoque with Renault's 1.5-litre twin-turbo V6. In qualifying trim, unrestricted boost produced enormous short-lived power. The 98T therefore demanded immense cooling, rear traction and driver commitment while preserving the compact proportions of its predecessor.
Eight poles, two victories
Senna won in Spain by 0.014 seconds and controlled the wet Detroit race, while taking eight pole positions during 1986. The Lotus could not match the Williams-Honda over a complete season, but its qualifying speed and Senna's precision created one of the defining images of the first turbo era.
