Newey used a long wheelbase and carefully controlled airflow to recover stability under the new narrow-track rules. McLaren's brake-steer system appeared early in the car's life before being prohibited, while the Mercedes V10 and Bridgestone tyres completed a remarkably integrated package.

Mika Häkkinen converted the car's speed into his first Drivers' title and McLaren won the Constructors' Championship. The MP4/13 began the rivalry with Ferrari that defined the closing years of the decade.
