Robin Herd evolved the M7A by moving part of the fuel load into broad side pontoons. The solution lowered the centre of gravity and changed the car's proportions without abandoning the straightforward monocoque and Cosworth DFV package that had made McLaren competitive.

Denny Hulme brought the M7B onto the podium before the car passed to Colin Crabbe's private team. It remains a short but revealing chapter in the rapid experimentation that followed McLaren's first Formula 1 victory.
