Zeltweg's circuit was formed from the runways of a military airfield and hosted the Austrian Grand Prix in 1964. The brutally bumpy concrete surface broke suspensions and eliminated most of the field, so a purpose-built replacement was developed at nearby Spielberg.
Lorenzo Bandini survived the severe attrition to score his only Formula 1 victory for Ferrari. Suspension and transmission failures eliminated much of the field, making the sole Zeltweg Grand Prix a classic test of endurance.
Across 3.186 km, its 4 corners create a distinct rhythm between braking, precision and acceleration. As a road circuit, it asks drivers and teams to adapt setup, tyre management and race strategy to the venue's particular constraints, while its clockwise direction shapes the sequence of its most demanding sectors.
