Watkins Glen's permanent circuit opened in 1956 after local road races established the New York venue. It became the popular home of the United States Grand Prix from 1961 to 1980; a major 1971 extension added the Boot section.
Innes Ireland's 1961 victory gave Team Lotus its first World Championship win. The circuit's history also carries tragedy: François Cevert died in qualifying in 1973, and Helmuth Koinigg was killed in the 1974 race.
