Year1977Memorable racesAndretti wins in front of the American crowd
Mario Andretti spent much of the 1977 United States Grand Prix West chasing Jody Scheckter's Wolf. When the leader developed a deflating tyre, the Lotus closed and attacked at the hairpin with only a few laps remaining. The victory carried meaning beyond the result: Andretti became the first American driver to win a World Championship Formula 1 race on home soil in Formula 1 machinery. Long Beach, conceived as a Californian counterpart to Monaco, gained a defining story. The home crowd saw not a solitary win, but a pursuit completed only when the opportunity finally appeared.
Year1983Memorable racesWatson wins from twenty-second
Watson turned twenty-second on the grid into victory at Long Beach in 1983. McLaren recovered on a street course that seemed an unlikely setting for such a charge. The result challenges the idea that qualifying settles everything between the walls. It belongs to the final configuration used there by Formula 1, after several earlier revisions.
