Kyalami opened in 1961 as a fast, flowing circuit at high altitude. Formula 1 used the original layout until 1985; redevelopment reversed and substantially shortened the course for the championship's return in 1992-93.
The 1982 weekend is remembered for the drivers' strike over new super-licence terms, with the field barricading itself in a hotel. Alain Prost then won despite an early puncture; Nigel Mansell dominated the 1992 return.
Across 4.261 km, its 13 corners create a distinct rhythm between braking, precision and acceleration. As a permanent racing circuit, it asks drivers and teams to adapt setup, tyre management and race strategy to the venue's particular constraints, while its anti-clockwise direction shapes the sequence of its most demanding sectors.
