The RE40 placed Renault's increasingly powerful twin-turbo V6 inside a carbon-fibre monocoque produced with specialist expertise. Careful cooling and large aerodynamic surfaces reveal how designers were learning to control the heat, lag and fuel demands of the turbo era.

Prost won four races and led the standings for much of the year, but the title escaped at the finale. The defeat was painful, yet the RE40 proved that the turbo project Renault had begun in 1977 had become a complete championship contender.
