Mercedes designed the chassis and PU106A power unit as one project. Separating the compressor from the turbine reduced heat around the intake, shortened the cooling layout and helped aerodynamic packaging. The W05 also paired strong energy recovery with a stable chassis, allowing Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg to exploit its performance across very different circuits.

The W05 won 16 of 19 Grands Prix, secured 18 pole positions and put its drivers on the podium 31 times. Hamilton won his second Drivers' title after a season-long contest with Rosberg, while Mercedes claimed its first Constructors' Championship and opened a run that would define the era.
