John Cooper and Owen Maddock placed the Coventry Climax engine behind the driver, concentrating mass near the centre of the car and removing the long propeller shaft of front-engined rivals. The T51 was lighter, smaller and more agile, and its success rapidly turned an unconventional idea into Formula 1's new standard.
