Alfa Romeo reached the new minimum weight more readily than many rivals and paired that advantage with a compact body and competitive Ferrari power unit. Early-season reliability issues remained, but the car's efficient baseline made it a regular points contender.

Valtteri Bottas scored heavily in the opening races and rookie Zhou Guanyu added points of his own. Although development slowed, the early return was enough to secure sixth place on countback, Alfa Romeo's best position of the modern partnership.
